Research: Dr. Robert R. Redfield research is mainly focused on clinical research and clinical care of chronic human viral infections, especially HIV. His dominant area of research interest is the development of novel biological approaches to the treatment of chronic viral pathogens with a particular focus of targeting host cell pathways for their therapeutic potential. Several novel areas under active translation investigation include: targeting key biochemical pathways of nucleotide biosynthesis to enhance activity of specific antiretroviral medication; targeting cell activation with specific cell cycles as aprimary treatment target; use of G1 cell cycle agents to down regulate expression of key HIV host cell receptors; use of G1 cell cycles to enhance antiviral activity of HIV entry inhibitors; and the use of HIV specific proteins as therapeutic vaccines.

Research: Dr. Bryan Krantz's research is focused in the areas of Chemistry, Biophysics, and Molecular & Cell Biology. He has used anthrax toxin as a model system to study translocation-coupled unfolding. Through those studies, he isolated a novel oligomer architecture of the toxin, an octamer, which has opened new research angles to study the crystal structure of the toxin in its various forms. His other research interests are in nanopore sensing of toxicants and in understanding how periodontal infections and secreted pore-forming toxins may influence infections and other chronic diseases.

Dr. Lihua Song received his bachelor’s degree in microbiology from Shandong University in 2001. After receiving his Ph.D. in military preventive medicine from the Academy of Military Medical Sciences in 2006, he joined the Beijing Institute of Microbiology and Epidemiology as an assistant professor of microbiology. In 2008, he was appointed to serve the United Nations’ Mission in Liberia for eight months. He received postdoctoral training in the Laboratory of Intracellular Parasites of the Rocky Mountain Laboratories of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseasesfrom July 2010 to June 2013. He became an associate professor in 2009 and chief of the Laboratory of Rickettsiology of the Beijing Institute of Microbiology and Epidemiologyin September 2013.
Research: Dr. Song’s research focuses on the biology, pathogenesis, and immunity of Rickettsia, Coxiella and Chlamydia. All these three intracellular prokaryotic parasites contain Category A and B bioterrorism agents. His long-term goal is to define their virulence factors important for bacterial evasion of innate host defense mechanisms, to define mechanisms of adaptive protective immunity, and to design new therapeutic strategies for the prevention of human intracellular bacterial infections.
